X-ray imaging of laser welding

Diagram of a NIST experiment measuring laser absorption during high-power laser metal processing. This research focused specifically on how absorption changes during keyhole formation, where the laser vaporizes the metal to form a cavity. The total reflected light is captured by an integrating sphere, and correlated with direct X-ray imaging of the sample at the point of contact with the laser.
