Trapping atoms with a metasurface lens

Illustration of a metasurface focusing light in order to trap rubidium atoms. The metasurface, composed of concentric rings of silicon columns arranged like a fresnel lens, focuses incoming light by absorbing a plane wave and re-radiating phase-shifted wavelets such that the resulting interference converges at a desired focal point.
