Description
Illustration showing a metasurface lens focusing light to trap rubidium atoms.

Context

The illustration shows a metasurface lens used to focus light into an optical tweezer for trapping rubidium atoms. The lens is made from concentric rings of silicon columns arranged like a flat Fresnel lens.

Approach

The final image shows the whole circular lens and the focused beam so the device reads as one complete system. Each ring changes the phase of the incoming light so the outgoing waves meet at the atom trap.

Process

An earlier direction showed a single row of the metasurface and the local wave-shaping mechanism. The final direction pulled back to show the full lens, the incoming light, and the focused trap.

Earlier direction: one row of the metasurface shaping the wavefront toward the trap.
